The name Thackray Crane has a proud history that dates from 1947, with the first commercial yard and crane on Cottman Street in Philadelphia. When Walter and Anna Cassalia Thackray founded the business, they insisted that honesty and integrity would be the cornerstone of all relationships. That’s a commitment customers continue to rely on to this day. Fueled by a work ethic that put a high value on quality service and pride of performance, the business grew and thrived—along with the family.
Today, all five, second-generation Thackray brothers and sisters manage daily operations while Walter and Anna remain active as consultants. Company growth has been carefully managed and targeted, with the primary focus on expansion within the Mid-Atlantic region. Internal growth, in turn, has been balanced with strategic acquisitions while continuous improvement of crane rental equipment has been a top priority.
The company also is constantly focused on ways to increase the efficiency of operations while developing new capabilities to handle the challenges of an ever-diversifying industry. One important goal has been to consistently increase lift capacity. The king of the fleet is currently a 500-ton Hydraulic, All-Terrain Crane with four powered axels and an onboard computer-controlled system. Conventional Crawler cranes and a wide range of Truck Cranes round out an inventory adaptable to any lifting job.
Expansion into the Construction Support Services is what truly set Thackray Crane Rental apart. Non-crane equipment rentals initially included Backhoes and Lulls. Now that component of the business also offers additional facilities and transportation services. Strategically located storage yards and warehouses provide our customers with secure areas for receiving manufacturers’ components and staging them for synchronized delivery, thereby solving the problem of job-site congestion.
Thackray Warehouses also can provide sheltered indoor storage and are adaptable as temporary, sub-assembly fabrication areas. Additional support components include Trailers and Transportation, Inventory Control, Permitting and Routing, and Escort Services. Thackray Crane Rental even specializes in air-conditioning cooling tower replacement for large commercial, retail and office complexes. Because work of this nature often takes place in high-traffic areas and congested urban centers, jobs usually must be scheduled for night or off-peak time frames, thus requiring special permits from traffic authorities and government agencies along with close timing for oversized deliveries and smooth job-site synchronization.
